Abandoned mineshafts are underground structures, which are randomly generated in the Overworld. They are enormous and their structure makes it very easy to get lost in them. An abandoned mineshaft is made up out of large empty rooms, which mark the beginning of the mine. Each of those rooms will have one or more corridors leading away from them, these are the mineshafts. They are 3×3 in size, but have mine supports that are scattered throughout the mineshafts. These mine supports are made out of 3 blocks on top of 2 pillars of 2 fence posts on top of each other. The mineshafts are also littered with partial minecart tracks, which makes abandoned mineshafts an incredible source for rails, as you can simply break the blocks below them to quickly gather the rails.
How to find an abandoned mineshaft in Minecraft?
Abandoned mineshafts generate naturally in the Overworld; they are usually found underground but some can be found in the ocean. They are generated before chunk features such as ores. As with other features, multiple abandoned mineshafts can generate near each other and intersect, producing larger complexes. They can also intersect with other cave systems. Corridors will generate a floor of wooden planks if they cross over empty space.
They can also generate on the surface in mesa biomes. These are composed of dark oak planks and fences, rather than oak. Cave spider spawners and various wooden pieces will not generate if above ground (i.e. the sky light where they generate is 8 or more), and generated railways will be more complete above ground.
