OnePlus 7: Evolution Is Evident From Inside

We already have with us the OnePlus 7, member of a new family of high-end smartphones that is accompanied by the ambitious OnePlus 7 Pro. OnePlus 7: Evolution Is Evident From Inside.

The standard OnePlus model is a somewhat more modest bet and a clear evolution of the OnePlus 6T, but it has its points of interest.

The look is identical to its immediate predecessor, but the differences are inside: comes the Snapdragon 855, a new camera system and a fingerprint recognition that promises to be faster and more accurate.

A Design with (mini) Notch

When something works, they say, don’t touch it. That’s what OnePlus seems to have understood with this new model, the OnePlus 7, which at least in its exterior appearance shows hardly any differences with its predecessor.

In fact, everything is practically the same as in the design of the OnePlus 6T, and we have an almost frameless front which highlights that small notch in the form of a drop. This was already characteristic of this model and that other manufacturers have taken advantage of in their last terminals.

Yes, that design has been slightly refined on the sides. Both the front and back are dominated by glass, and the OnePlus 7 will be available in two colors, the so-called ‘Mirror gray’ and ‘Red’. A bright red color that this time has a slight gradient to a slightly darker tone that certainly gives it a fantastic look.

In the back we find the dual camera system that changes in its specifications and also a little in its layout. It’s still vertical, but the Dual LED Flash is located as part of that block when in the 6T was separated.

The button panel doesn’t change. We have the same power and volume buttons, plus the ‘Alert Slider’ switch to activate the ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode.

In the lower part we have again the USB-C connector and the speakers, and in OnePlus continue to maintain the decision of previous models and we do not have 3.5 mm connector for headphones.

More Powerful than Ever

As expected, the leap in performance comes from the Snapdragon 855, the processor that is the protagonist in the high range and is an integral part of this device.

According to OnePlus thanks to it we can expect a performance of 45% and an efficiency 20% higher than the Snapdragon 845.

The Adreno 640 GPU also offers a 20% increase in performance over its predecessor, as well as being 30% more efficient. That will probably help to obtain remarkable autonomy.

The battery is still 3,700 mAh, an interesting fact that perhaps some could have expected to increase, especially with a screen like the one we have in the OnePlus 7: 6.41 inches protected by a glass Gorilla Glass 6.

We have fast charging with the Dash Charging system and the charger of 5 V and 4 A, but again no wireless charging.

There are other important changes in the interior that for example affect the fingerprint reader under the screen.

According to OnePlus, this new implementation is much faster and more precise thanks to a “3 element objective” and a larger sensor that, together with more efficient algorithms, improve the behavior of this section.

The sound is another of the improved sections thanks to a set of two speakers with a more powerful amplifier.

The collaboration with Dolby to refine and polish the behavior of these speakers is according to OnePlus note outstanding terminal.

Software Also Matters

The edition of OxygenOS based on Android 9.0 Pie is once again the absolute protagonist of the OnePlus software bet, which continues to maintain one of the most valued ROMs by its users for its little “interference” with the Android platform.

To help this operating system there are new features in the management of internal memory. The so-called “RAM Boost”. Is an artificial intelligence system that learns our usage habits and pre-allocates the available RAM to applications that make use of a lot of memory even before we open them. Something that will allow you to access them more quickly.

This feature also helps to have more applications open in the background without affecting the performance of OnePlus 7.

There are two other eye-catching New Features.

The first, the “Screen Recorder” option, which allows us to capture what we are showing on screen at a resolution of 2340×1080.

There are no limits for these recordings, which we can pause and continue at any time, and we can even add comments thanks to the microphone jack.

Accompanying it is the second option, the so-called “Zen Mode” which is an adaptation of the “digital welfare” that came to Android 9.0 Pie and that allows monitoring the use of the terminal to minimize the use of certain applications.

In this case the Zen mode focuses on deactivating the main functions of the phone for 20 minutes. In this period we will only be able to make emergency calls, receive any call or take pictures.

48 Mpixels want to be enough for everything

Contrary to what other terminals have done in their dual or triple camera systems, here OnePlus bets everything on a dual system in which the main 48 Mpixel sensor has a fundamental importance.

This is the Sony IMX586 that has already become famous in other terminals -equipped by the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, for example- and has a resolution of 48 Mpixels, a pixel size of 0.8 to 1.6 microns, an aperture f/1.7 and the important support of digital stabilization.

This sensor is supported by the unspecified secondary with 5 Mpixels, a pixel size of 1.12 microns and a f/2.4 aperture. The Dual LED flash is as we said below those two sensors.

On the front we have a 16 Mpixel Sony IMX471 sensor with 1 micron pixel size, fixed focus and f/2.0 aperture.

It is also capable of recording 1080p video at 30 fps, but more important is its behavior as a system for facial recognition.

It will be interesting to see how this dual system behaves, and to try to make a leap in this field OnePlus has created the UltraShot technology that combines the HDR+ mode with the so-called “Super Resolution”, which combines the information of several captures in one to achieve an optimal level of detail.
