In statistics, the median (from the Latin mediānus’ of the medium’) represents the value of the central position variable in a set of ordered data. How to find the median?

The median of a group of numbers is that the average number in the group (after the amounts are ordered from lowest to highest) – or, even if there’s an even number of numbers, the median would be the average of both typical amounts.

The median is the arithmetic median of a set of numbers. Is also a numerical value that separates the upper half of a set from the lower half. You can use the median is used for normal distributions of numbers, with a low number of atypical values.

How to find the median?

  1. We order the data from the smaller to the biggest value.
  2. If the series has an odd number of values, the median is the central value.
    • 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6           Me = 5
  3. If the series has an even number of values, the median is the mean between the two central values.
    • 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12                Me (10+9)/2 = 9,5

There are two methods for calculating the median:

  1. Considering the data individually, without grouping them.
  2. Using the data grouped in class intervals.
